Camping Trip
This weekend we did our now annual group camping trip with friends in the area. We got a group campsite just north of Black Hawk about an hour or so away from home. Don't worry, we didn't gamble all our money away at the Black Hawk casinos. Our campsite was beautiful with lots of trees (pine beetles have killed some but there's still a lot of lodge pole pines left) and spaced well enough apart from the other groups.
You had to walk in a bit to the campsite so here was the mode of transportation for kids and gear.
Thursday night we had the place to ourselves and it was great. The one thing about camping I have to just deal with is that I know the first night will be rough sleeping as the kids go to bed late and then the little ones are up a lot.
We keep looking forward to future years when the kids will have their own tents and entertain themselves for the most part but Elizabeth and Rachel did well this year. Some of the girls they palled around with.
We mostly stayed at camp and ate tons of yummy food courtesy of our resident dutch oven chef, none other than my wonderful husband Eric. Since I like to talk about food (and eat it of course) here's what we had. Foil dinners, smores, mountain man breakfast, PB&J (everything tastes better in the great outdoors), chicken soup, the best cornbread ever, chocolate cherry dump cake, donuts, bacon (insert Homer's drooling mouth expression), and more that I can't think of right now. We "hiked" up to the group lunch/play area where the kids enjoyed the playground and we got a nice view of the mountains.
