Summer Nature Adventures

I guess I've waited to post this since weather-wise it doesn't feel like summer is over yet.  We tried to get out in nature as much as possible in the summer on hikes, camping, and more to enjoy what our beautiful state of Colorado offers.

We started things off with a bang on Memorial Day weekend taking the little walk/hike around Red Rocks.  Love that place for great music concerts and beauty.

Downtown Morrison bike path next to the river.

The first real hike of the summer with the girls was to Maxwell Falls, a four mile roundtrip up and down hike to a waterfall.

Our family camping trip this summer included river rafting!  We went up by Cotopaxi (between Salida & Buena Vista) and camped at Cutty's Resort and rafted on the Colorado river.  We swam, watched the river, and played at the clubhouse.  River rafting was fun and the water was high and fast with all the late spring rains.  It rained each afternoon and Elizabeth threw up the second night so we didn't stay the third.  Rachel and Eric went on a hike while the rest of us hung out playing mini golf and doing puzzles at the clubhouse.

The view from our campsite
 The flies really loved Elizabeth

From mountains to the Aurora Reservoir and back.  We went to the reservoir over the 4th of July weekend and then again with our friends the Augers.  The kids loved building whole sand empires.

Our next hike was up to Devils Head Lookout, a 1.5 hike then a lot of stairs up to the great view of Denver and Salida.

We kept on rolling with another hike at Mt. Falcon where we saw an old summer home, lookout tower, and a castle.

Since we were close by Golden, we stopped by Heritage Square to take a train ride (Evelyn and me), zipline (Elizabeth & Rachel), and ropes course (mostly Rachel).

One last hurrah was a girls camping trip (Eric was camping with his guy friends) up to Rocky Mountain National Park.  We did two hikes, one up to four lakes and another one to a meadow.  The girls also likes playing in the river/creek by our campsite.

Sadly, school started but on the unofficial end of summer Labor Day weekend we went as a family to Alderfer/Three Sisters park and loved climbing all the rocks.

Now on to soccer most Saturdays and then snow activities in the winter.  Of course if there are nice days we will try to get out to the mountains again.
