My Garden Experience

For those of you who knew me in yonder years will probably wonder how tomboy Alicia got into gardening. I have always loved plants, even though my younger sister is the expert at plants as she is majoring in them. With our new house, I thought I'd try a vegetable garden since everyone I talked to said that everything just grows in Ohio, and they were right.
I grew some strawberry plants, carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, green onions, basil, and zucchini. The strawberries didn't produce anything this year but hopefully I don't kill them over winter and they'll come up next year. As for everything else, it came up in abundance. My advice, never plant a whole packet of basil or green onion seeds unless you eat pesto and onion salad everyday. I gave away most of my cucumbers as I found we didn't really eat them. I have tons of little carrots because I planted way too many of them so now I have to freeze them or make carrot cake and bread.
Next year I will be doing a few things differently. For one, I got sold on square foot gardening at an Enrichment night, a slightly different approach to gardening that the church unofficially recommends. Next year I hope to plant more variety with less excess food. I'm excited about it so here's to gardening!
