Weekend Camping Getaway

We didn't have any formal camping trips planned for the summer which was a first for us so we took advantage of a completely free weekend and headed out camping.  Since we didn't have any reservations we thought our best bet would be where we went camping last year in the Woodland Park area.

Our first stop on the way up was donuts at the Donut Mill.

It was a good thing we went there because I texted a friend where we were and she texted back that they had the same idea to camp in the same place so we actually got sites together!  An impromptu group camping trip with our camping friends is always a pleasant surprise.  We set up camp and headed out to Florissant Fossil Bed National Monument.  Turns out about 34 million years ago redwood trees grew in Colorado added with volcano activity means we now have petrified stumps.  The kids liked looking at the other fossils and worked hard to become junior rangers.

Saturday we headed back to Florissant to hike a little more on the 14 miles of trails they have.  The girls were tired so we only did about two and then headed to a creek to have a picnic lunch.

After a much needed rest back at camp (who really sleeps all that great while camping?) we surprised the girls with horseback riding at a nearby ranch.  It had rained in the afternoon but by the time our slot came up the rain had thankfully passed.  The girls had no clue what the surprise was even after I had gone to the office and signed them up and they were also whining about having to change into jeans but I kept reminding them my surprises were good.  I hope now that they believe me.

The ranch also had a little petting zoo with a donkey, Shetland ponies, billy goats, llamas, ducks, geese, and chickens.

Watch out, they spit!  They didn't really spit at us but Eric kind of got freaked out at how they have a cleft lip that totally separates when they open their mouth.
For a somewhat impromptu camping getaway, I think it was a success.  The girls got to play with friends, us adults got to chat around the campfire, we got to enjoy nature, eat awesome food made in the dutch oven and over the fire, and probably the biggest plus of all just getting out of town for a few days and spending quality time as a family.  One last shot of our campsite and the favorite place for the kids to play--on the hammock (thanks dad for bringing it back from Mexico for us!).

Days of the Year--June

A couple months ago I ran across this website www.daysoftheyear.com that has fun days you can celebrate every day of the year with some days having more than one idea.  I decided to make a calendar for summer just to give us something different during our ten-week break.  We have mostly done the food ones since we love food in our house and I wasn't the best over our vacations but here are some highlights from June.

June 11: Corn on the Cob Day

June 13: Sewing Machine Day--Elizabeth is getting into making lots of toys and things for our pet rats so we sat down at the sewing machine and made a little hammock for them.  Here are some older sewing machines I saw at a garage sale that day.

June 16: Fudge Day--Usually I save this recipe for Christmas but who doesn't want fudge year round?

June 17: Eat Your Vegetables Day--The girls weren't too excited about this one especially following right after fudge day.

June 18: Go Fishing Day--We played "Go Fish" and ate goldfish for lunch.

June 20: American Eagle Day--We checked out some books from the library about the bald eagle and learned more about it.

June 26: Canoe Day--We didn't canoe but paddle-boated while in Mt. Rushmore.

June 28: Insurance Awareness Day--Yes, we talked about all kinds of insurance with the kids.  They got first hand experience as we had to file an insurance claim on our house after a bad hail storm earlier in the month that ruined our roof, siding, windows, and deck.

June 30: Social Media Day--We had a family home evening lesson about the different forms of social media and good ways to use them.

More to come in July but the girls ask each morning what the day is and I like that excitement.
